Leaders Create More Impact When They Prioritise Personal Growth

December 13, 20242 min read

Tuning in to identifying the leaders who inspire many of us,
it's notable that they are the individuals who have done (and continue to do) the "hardest" work that many of us may ever embark on.. the inner work.

I believe that the best leaders don’t just lead others—they lead themselves first.

Personal growth isn’t optional; it’s foundational, and when leaders prioritise their own self development, they become someone who has the deeper ability to connect, inspire, and create meaningful impact.

But here’s the thing… too many leaders out there are still operating from a place of "let’s just getting the job done." They’re focused on reaching their targets, metrics and the deadlines, and often they’re not pausing, and reflecting on themselves. And by default, they miss the opportunity to ask themselves, “Am I growing? Am I aligned with what I’m asking of my team?” And the things is, we know that staying stagnant is not an option.

Personal Growth As A Leader Is Foundational

We know that it’s about showing up in a way that inspires others to want to do the same. Imagine a world where leadership starts from within. A world where leaders know their strengths, their triggers, and their values—and lead from them and with them. That’s the kind of leadership people will rally behind. That’s the kind of leadership that creates teams who are energised, loyal, and excited to engage and create. Proof It IS happening out there.

Think of the leaders who’ve become known, not because of their titles or their climb into leadership, but because of their genuine presence and personal growth. You see it in workplaces where the team culture thrives because the leader is grounded, emotionally intelligent, and in tune with their people. The proof is all around us— these are the leaders that we admire. We don’t just see them, we feel different when we’re around them.

But here’s the hard truth: if leaders don’t prioritise their own growth, they risk leading teams that mirror their stagnation. Frustration builds, communication breaks down, and the vision fades. The change does start with you. When you grow, your leadership grows. And when your leadership grows, so does your team’s success.

It’s up to us to set the standard. To show that leadership isn’t about ticking boxes or pushing others forward while we stand still. It’s about leading from within, growing ourselves first so we can create the space for others to grow with us.

So here’s my challenge for you: Who do you want to be as a leader? Are you willing to invest in your own emotional and behavioural growth and awareness so that you can give your team the best version of you? Because, if you want to make an impact, it starts with you.
